PROJECT

SPOTIFY APP REDESIGN

SUMMARY

As part of a team of 3 UX designers our goal was to improve personalization in users' experience of the Spotify app, despite customization features already being present

ROLE

UX Researcher
UI Designer

BACKGROUND

Early insights

We began the design process by exploring current user experience with Spotify. Secondary sources revealed a myriad of pain points. However users were mainly interest in having more control over how the app is personalized for them.

THE NEED

How might we intervene?

To identify specific design opportunities, we also conducted primary research in the form of semi-structured user interviews. We developed a number of questions for 6 different users based on insights from our secondary research. After the interviews, we took the results and fed them through different research frameworks. These frameworks allowed us to revise our initial user archetypes into more informed personas and generate useful "how might we?" questions.

THE TASK

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

After distilling our research insights into design opportunities in the form of "How might we" questions, we selected those how questions that were within the scope of the project, and developed them into design intervention concepts.

HOW MIGHT WE QUESTIONS
2. HOW MIGHT WE MAKE THE HOME AND SEARCH PAGE LESS CROWDED AND OVERWHELMING?
3. HOW MIGHT WE INTRODUCE FEATURES THE USER HASN'T USED BEFORE?
5. HOW MIGHT WE DESIGN A USER'S PLAYLIST LIBRARY TO MAKE IT MORE PERSONAL FOR THEM?

THE TASK

HIGH FIDELITY PROTOTYPES

After prototyping intervention concepts in the form of paper prototypes, we decided to create hi-fidelity prototypes in Figma in order to conduct usability tests.

FUTURE WORK

USER EVALUATION

Unfortunately due at this point we had reached the end of the project lifecycle. However, if we were to continue this redesign, our next step would be to deploy this mockup in the world to evaluate the user experience of our redesign.
